F1 Chinese GP: McLaren take 1-2 lead, Ferrari duo disqualified

The second race of the year saw McLaren’s Piastri and Norris take the 1-2 win at the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix, followed by Russel and Verstappen in fourth. The race also saw the Ferrari duo – Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc – being disqualified after the race, leaving the Italian team empty-handed after the race. Alongside the Ferrari, Alpine’s Pierre Gasly was also disqualified.

Starting from pole position, Piastri made the most of the race by keeping his position throughout the race, winning the 56-lap Chinese Grand Prix. His teammate, Norris took seconds, and Mercedes’ George Russel took third. The Silver Arrow did overtake Norris’ McLaren briefly but gave away the position soon after.

Red Bull’s Verstappen predicted a difficult race and his fourth position shows what the Champion was foreseeing. The Ferrari drivers made contact with each other in the opening lap itself. Having suffered a damaged front wing, Leclerc decided to push on without making a change, while Hamilton was the only front-runner to have made a two-stop pit strategy and even set a series of fast laps.

F1 Chinese GP: Ferrari disqualifications

The duo – Hamilton and Leclerc – were handed a disqualification after finishing the race in fifth and sixth position. After technical checks, Hamilton was disqualified after excess wear on the skid plank, while Leclerc’s car was found to be 1 kg underweight. The disqualification will take a hit on Ferrari’s overall standings in the season. Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, who finished 11th overall, was also handed a disqualification after the car did not meet the required weight.
