The Ahmedabad-based Matter Motor is focusing on its geared electric motorcycles to penetrate the electric two-wheeler market and accelerate the transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) to electric.

The company intends to open 30 dealerships by next month and has set a sales target of 10,000 units this year, Arun Pratap Singh, co-founder and Group COO of Matter, said after a dealership was opened here on Wednesday.

At present, the average monthly sales of electric motorcycles in the country stand at around 2,000 units. Their under-representation in the electric two-wheeler segment, Singh said, was due to lack of suitable options.

Available electric motorcycles are “effectively glorified electric scooters”, which have not enthused traditional motorcycle users enough to make the switch to electric, he said. “A motorcycle without gears is not a motorcycle,” he added. In May 2025, electric scooter sales surpassed 100,000 units.

Developing a geared electric motorcycle involves complex technology, which is why few companies have ventured into this segment. He said Matter has designed a liquid-cooled powertrain tailored for Indian road and climate conditions, improving safety and preventing uncontrolled overheating. Matter has invested heavily in technology and has filed 350 patents to support its innovations.

The challenges posed by the failure of electric motorcycle brands like Tork Motorcycles have made it more difficult for Matter to convince the market, including dealerships, of the potential of electric motorcycles. Nevertheless, Matter aims to change the trajectory of electric motorcycles with its first premium offering, the AERA 5000 Plus, priced at Rs 1,93,826, which can be compared to 160cc ICE motorcycles.

Singh said the company plans to launch additional models in the lower segment that will compete with 100-125cc ICE motorcycles. Matter’s manufacturing facility in Ahmedabad is capable of producing 120,000 units annually.

Matter is expanding its network and investing in marketing campaigns. Singh said the company has raised $75 million till date and is seeking an additional $200 million to fund its expansion and growth.
