The Delhi government has launched the Saheli Smart Card, a personalised travel pass featuring the holder’s name and photo, offering free rides to women and transgender residents aged 12 and above on all DTC and Cluster buses. Unveiled under the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) framework, this digital pass replaces the outdated pink paper ticket system, ensuring safe, accessible, and paperless travel.

A transport official spoke to PTI and said, “To obtain the digital card, applicants must be bona fide residents of Delhi, aged 12 years or above, and have valid proof of address. They must register online through the DTC portal, select a participating bank, and complete full KYC verification at the chosen bank branch.”

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, in her March Budget Day address, criticised the previous system’s corruption and hailed the smart card as a secure alternative. With DTC operating 44 depots (including one in Noida) and a fleet of 3,266 buses (1,950 electric and 1,694 CNG), this initiative marks a new era for public transport. The new smart card system is expected to roll out by August 15.

Benefits and Features of the Saheli smart card

The Saheli Smart Card enables free travel exclusively on DTC and Cluster buses, with recharge and top-up options for other transit modes. Issued by banks after full KYC verification, the card requires activation via the Automatic Fare Collection System (AFCS) of DTC. While travel is free, banks may charge a nominal issuance or maintenance fee. In case of loss, users must report to the issuing bank for a replacement. This move, driven by the government’s commitment to inclusivity, excludes direct DTC issuance, ensuring a streamlined process.

How to Apply for the Saheli smart card?

To apply, eligible Delhi residents aged 12+ must register online via the DTC portal, select a participating bank, and complete KYC verification at the bank branch. Required documents include an Aadhaar card, PAN card, proof of Delhi residence, a passport-size photo, and additional bank-specific KYC papers. The bank dispatches the card to the registered address post-verification. The government has invited banks to express interest, emphasising a corruption-free, digital solution. No cards are issued directly by DTC.
