Volvo 40 Series concepts might become basis for new-generation V40 and XC40

Volvo’s new entry premium car range will include a pure battery electric and Twin Engine plug-in hybrid powertrain trims. The company plans to have electric variants of its entire portfolio in future.

Volvo Cars, the Swedish premium carmaker, has unveiled two new concepts that preview the company’s future lineup. The newly released Volvo 40 series concepts are based on Volvo’s new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA). The two new Volvo concepts unveiled by the company are – 40.1 and 40.2. While the former previews the new-generation XC40 crossover, the latter is expected to become the basis for the all-new V40 hatchback.

“Volvo’s strategy for the entry premium cars is an essential element in its ongoing global operational and financial transformation. The Swedish company is currently implementing an ambitious revitalisation plan that will reposition the brand to compete with its global premium competitors within the next four years.”, said the company in a statement.

Volvo’s new entry premium car range will include a pure battery electric and Twin Engine plug-in hybrid powertrain trims. The company plans to have electric variants of its entire portfolio in future. The Swedish carmaker plans to sell up to 1 million electrified cars by 2025 worldwide.

“By taking a modular approach to both vehicle architecture and powertrain development we have succeeded in leap-frogging many of the players in the premium segment,” said Dr Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research & Development. “Our new battery electric powertrain variant opens yet another exciting chapter in the unfolding Volvo story.”

The carmaker has also confirmed that the first new 40 series car is expected to go into production in 2017. The company also aims to produce a pure electric car on its larger Scalable Product Architecture by 2019. Powering these cars will be Volvo’s new T5 Twin 3-cylinder petrol engine that will be couple with an electric motor. This powertrain will come mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
