Nissan is set to strengthen its presence in the Indian passenger vehicle market with the launch of the Gravite MPV by March 2026, marking the brand’s second product addition as it recalibrates its India strategy after a period of consolidation. Nissan’s renewed product activity comes after it sold its stake in the Chennai plant to Renault last year as part of a global restructuring exercise. While Renault now fully owns the facility, it continues to contract-manufacture Nissan models for both domestic and export markets.

The Gravite will be based on the Renault Triber and built at Renault’s Chennai manufacturing facility under a contract manufacturing arrangement. The model will join the Magnite SUV, which has been Nissan’s sole volume driver in India in recent years. Nissan announced that the global debut of the Gravite will take place next month, signaling the start of a phased product rollout aimed at improving scale and showroom footfalls. The Gravite will share the CMF-A+ platform, powertrain and select design elements with the Triber, allowing Nissan to leverage Renault’s cost base.

Leveraging the Alliance

Positioned in the compact MPV segment, the Gravite will offer an alternative to the Renault Triber and Maruti Eeco, currently the only two mainstream players in the space. The MPV is expected to be powered by a 1.0-litre petrol engine, paired with either a 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT gearbox. A CNG option could be introduced later as a dealer fitment.

Scaling Up

The Gravite will be followed by a third model, the Nissan Tekton, a mid-size SUV based on the upcoming Renault Duster, scheduled to join the line-up later in 2026. Like the Magnite and Gravite, the Tekton will also be manufactured at the Chennai plant.
