Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) has expanded its solar energy capacity by 30MWp through the commissioning of two new projects. A 20MWp solar power plant has been installed at its upcoming facility in Kharkhoda, Haryana, while an additional 10MWp has been added to the existing setup at the Manesar plant.
These developments have raised MSIL’s total solar capacity from 49MWp to 79MWp over the past year. In addition, the company is increasing the proportion of green power sourced from State Electricity Boards for its operations. These efforts, combined with its solar energy initiatives, will significantly enhance the Company’s transition towards renewable energy.
Maruti to expand green energy intiatives
Speaking on Maruti’s green energy initiatives, Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said, “Aligned with our parent company, Suzuki Motor Corporation’s Environment Vision 2050 and the Government of India’s focus on renewable energy, we are systematically enhancing the use of renewable energy in our operations. By FY2030-31, Maruti Suzuki plans to reach 319MWp of solar capacity, backed by an investment of over INR 925 crore.”
He added that, through sustained efforts, the share of renewable energy in the company’s total electricity consumption was expected to reach nearly 85% by FY2030-31. MSIL is proactively adopting green manufacturing practices across all its facilities. The recent expansion of solar capacity marks a major step in reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
These efforts are in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Operations at the Kharkhoda plant started earlier in February this year. Prior to Kharkhoda, Maruti Suzuki operated three plants in India: Gurgaon, Manesar and Gujarat Plants with a total annual production capacity of 2.35 million units. With the commencement of operations at the Kharkhoda Plant, annual production capacity of Maruti Suzuki in India will be 2.6 million units.
