The Global New Car Assessment Program (GNCAP) conducted safety crash tests on the India-manufactured Renault Triber intended for African markets. Unfortunately, this affordable MPV in the Indian market was awarded a disheartening two-star rating for occupant safety.
Renault Triber: Crash results
In 2021, the Triber achieved a 4-star rating in crash tests, but now, under the new rules and regulations, the MPV can only manage 2 stars. It lost points on inadequate chest protection for both driver and passenger in frontal and side-impact tests. Therefore, for adult occupant protection, the Triber scored 22.29 out of 34 points.
Due to a lack of ISOFIX anchorages, the Triber only scored 19.99 out of 49 points. The crash tests showcased that the child dummy was exposed to head, neck, and chest injuries.
The Triber comes standard with two front airbags and due to the lack of side airbags, it didn’t undergo a side pole impact test.
The Global NCAP crash test report states that the Triber’s body structure is deemed unstable, indicating compromised occupant protection in a collision.
Alejandro Furas, Global NCAP Secretary General said, “We are disappointed to see global brands like Renault … offer such a low safety performance in markets like South Africa whilst achieving much higher levels of protection in many other global markets. Don’t African consumers deserve the same level of safety?”
Renault Triber: Engine Specs
The Triber is powered by a 1-litre petrol engine with an output of 71 bhp and 96 Nm of torque. It is available in two transmissions — a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT.
