Volvo announced that the XC60 is the Swedish car manufacturer’s best-selling vehicle of all time. Overtaking the Volvo 240, the XC60 has sold over 2.7 million units globally since its launch in 2008. The mid-size SUV has been a runaway success due to its Scandinavian elegance, cutting-edge technology, and a safety-first approach.

Susanne Hägglund, Head of Global Offer at Volvo Cars, reflected on the milestone, stating, “Growing up in Sweden in the 1980s, the Volvo 240 was the iconic family car – you could spot one in almost every driveway.” She said, “Today, the XC60 has taken over that position in two ways. Not only as the family favourite, but also becoming our all-time top-seller, which in itself is the ultimate proof point of a successful car. And now, with the latest updates, it gets even better.”

In India, the XC60 continues to gain momentum among urban families looking for premium safety, utility, and luxury in one package. According to Jyoti Malhotra, Managing Director, Volvo Car India, “What makes the XC60 so popular has a lot to do with how it seamlessly integrates power with the core value that defines Volvo: safety. For families across India, the XC60 offers that perfect blend of Scandinavian design, SUV practicality, and, most importantly, the unparalleled peace of mind that comes with driving a Volvo car. It’s a confident and well-built package designed to showcase power and protect people”.

Innovation, Safety, and Practicality: The XC60 Legacy

What sets the XC60 apart is its innovation under the hood and the safety tech that surrounds every passenger. Volvo’s commitment to safety led to the introduction of City Safety, the world’s first low-speed automatic emergency braking system, in the XC60. This pioneering tech, launched in 2008, has since become an industry standard across brands.

The XC60 also introduced Oncoming Lane Mitigation in 2017, a feature that actively steers the car back into its lane if it senses a drift into oncoming traffic. These technologies, along with its robust safety cage and advanced driver assistance systems, have helped the XC60 earn numerous independent safety awards, reinforcing Volvo’s long-standing reputation.

Just as the Volvo 240 once defined family safety and comfort, the XC60 carries forward that legacy with a future-ready twist, backed by impressive global sales, a strong presence in India, and features that continue to set industry benchmarks
