While the bookings for the Datsun redi-GO will begin in May, it will be launched in June

The much-anticipated Datsun redi-GO finally made its global debut in India on Thursday i.e. April 14, 2016. With this, the rediGo became the third Datsun product to have made its world premier in India. The first two were GO hatchback and GO+ sub-compact MPV. Set to take on the Renault Kwid, Maruti Alto 800 and Hyundai Eon, the new small car from Datsun will be launched in June. The bookings for the car, however, will commence from May 1, 2016.

The Datsun redi-GO is built on Renault-Nissan Alliance’s CMF-A (versatile Common Module Family) platform on which the Kwid too is based. The alliance develops this architecture in-house at its Chennai-based facility with high level of localisation. Besides the platform, the redi-GO and Kwid will also share the 0.8-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine which too has been built jointly by the two carmakers. All the aforementioned things will surely help the company price the new Datsun small car as less as the Kwid.

While there will only be the small 799cc petrol engine initially, there could be a slightly bigger petrol and a diesel powertrain in months to come. The 799cc petrol engine is good for 53bhp and 72Nm.

Though the Datsun redi GO and Renault Kwid share platform and engine, both the vehicles look completely different from each other. Only similarity that can be noticed here is Crossover-ish look of both the cars. The vehicle’s high shoulder line, roof rails and high ground clearance surely give it an overall aggressive stance.

Global Head of Datsun Vincent Cobeesaid: “In a sea of lookalike hatchbacks, the Datsun redi-GO’s modern and distinctive looks help it stand out from the crowd. Aptly called YUKAN in Japanese (brave and bold), the design reflectsthe sense of individuality of the people who will buy the car: confident go-getters who know where they want to be in life.

Guillaume Sicard, Nissan India Operations’ president said:“Datsun’s growth strategy in India will continue to reflect our commitment to local engineering, development and manufacturing. The Datsun redi-GO, as a tangible expression of this commitment, offers several best-in-class capabilities. It is created to bring fun, free and confident thinking to the otherwise traditional compact hatchback segment.”
