BMW has just teased the new M5, ahead of it’s scheduled to unveil at Frankfurt later this year. BMW M-cars have always been the purist’s poison of choice. Mostly because they’ve always been the most exciting to drive, To that end, the M5 could quite easily be the holy grail, now earlier this year we heard the upcoming M5 bleating its way around the ‘ring, twin turbo V8 blaring away. Now over the years, the M5 has been through many engines from a flat-6, a V6 than a V8, but through it all, it’s maintained its staunch rear wheel drive character. Well, you can kiss that goodbye, the new M5 is set to the ditch the RWD format for an all wheel drive setup. A bold move from BMW considering that M-division fans are much more pedantic about these things than your usual German super salon. BMW has also gone on record to specify that while it is an AWD, most of the power will be sent to the rear most of the time, only allowing four wheel power to get you out of hairy situations. BMW’s factory team driver Timo Glock also went on record to say that it retains most of the characteristics. Timo Glock one of BMW’s factory driver went on record to assure fans that the AWD does not mean you can’t get the tail wagging.
BMW says that while the current M was capable, it was far too isolated to be a dual-character car, and required much too much concentration to go fast than the Mercedes-AMG E63. This M however, should bring the ball back in BMW’s court. Point being you can expect a few more snippets from BMW in the coming week, and we will finally see the car next month at Frankfurt so keep sharp.
