Car designer Marcello Gandini best known for Lamborghini Countach, Miura dies. Auto world pays tribute to his legacy

One of the best known masters of car designs is no more. The legendary designer at Lamborghini Marcello Gandini passed away on Wednesday. He was 85. Born in Turin to an Orchestra Conductor in 1938, his designs orchestrated absolute panache and poise.

One of his best known and most famous sports car designs is the Lamborghini Countach. In fact some of the best known Italian sports cars of the 1960s and 1970s were designed by him including the Miura for Lamborghini, Alfa Romeo Montreal, Lancia Stratos, Fiat X1/9.

Even the first generation BMW 5 Series, Citroën BX, Mini Innocenti and Renault Supercinq are products of his designing brilliance. He started his freelancing design stint in the 1980s. In the 1990s he collaborated with Maserati and designed the Shamal and second generation Ghilbi.

The automotive world paid rich tribute to his legacy and craftsmanship. Bidding adieu to the master designer, Lamborghini celebrated Gandini’s rich legacy, “Marcello Gandini left an indelible mark in both car design and Lamborghini’s history, and our thoughts and condolences are with his family at this time.”

Leading Indian automotive designer and currently the Chief Design & Creative Officer, Auto & Farm Sectors, Mahindra and Mahindra, Pratap Bose wrote, “Marcello Gandini, one of the greatest car designers ever, is no more. His creation graced countless boys’ and girls’ walls across the world. The Miura, Diablo and Countach were some of his master works. Buon Viaggio Maestro, your work will live on in our hearts and on our streets.”
