The fourth-generation Suzuki Swift underwent Euro NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) crash tests and scored 3 stars. The previous version of the hatchback had also received a 3-star rating by Euro NCAP. Earlier this year, the same global spec Swift was awarded a 4-star safety rating by Japan NCAP. One has to keep in mind the global Swift model is different from the Indian version as it’s equipped with additional safety features like Advanced Driver Assistance Systems.

The Euro NCAP tests are divided into four divisions — Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), Child Occupant Protection (COP), Vulnerable Road Users (VRU) and Safety Assist (SA). In the recent test, the Swift scored 26.9 out of 40 points or 67 per cent. Based on the report, the Swift received good for head protection, weak for the chest and good for the knees and femurs of both the driver and passenger.
For Child Occupant Protection (COP), the Swift was rated poor for the protection of the neck of the 10-year dummy. In the case of chest and head protection, it received a weak and marginal rating. It scored 32.1 out of 49 points and 65 per cent.
The Swift scored 48 out of 63 points or 76 per cent in the Vulnerable Road Userssection. The hatch received a good rating for cyclist’s protection, adequate for pedestrian and motorcyclist’s safety. Being a global spec, the Swift is equipped with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and it managed to score 11.3 points out of 18 points or 62 per cent.

Sadly, the Swift sold in India does not receive ADAS which includes functions like autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and lane assist system. It is expected to undergo Bharat NCAP crash testing. The India version of Swift is equipped with six airbags, an electronic stability program, a hill hold assist, a reverse parking camera and ISOFIX child seat anchorages.
