2018 Ford Mustang facelift spotted in India, to launch later this year

Ford Mustang is perhaps the most recognisable American muscle car in India, with some even calling it the country’s first proper grand tourer. It has already garnered a lot of popularity and now, a new more sophisticated version is on way.

Ford unveiled the European spec 2018 Mustang GT with a sleek new design in September 2017. Besides tweaks to the design, the new Mustang boasts of a more sophisticated engine, suspension upgrades and better driver assistance technology, along with new customisation options. And now, the 2018 Ford Mustang GT facelift has been spotted at a Ford stockyard in India, where it will go on sale this year. Unfortunately, Ford isn’t participating in Auto Expo 2018, so fans will not get a glimpse of India’s only proper muscle car next month. However, the American brand would launch the GT car sometime this year.

The new Ford Mustang GT retains the instantly-recognisable Mustang profile but has a more athletic appearance enhanced with LED lighting technology, and a choice of 11 bold exterior colours and new alloy wheel options. The 2018 Mustang could also be the fastest accelerating ever, with an enhanced 5.0-litre V8 engine that offers an anticipated 443 hp, and is paired with Ford’s new 10-speed automatic transmission.

2018 Ford Mustang will also feature the ‘Good Neighbour Mode’ or Quiet Mode’ for early mornings or late nights. While most performance cars come with ‘Sport Exhaust’ mode that adds an extra roar to the exhaust note at the press of a button, including the Mustang GT, Ford has acknowledged the problem of too much noise at inappropriate times. What the ‘Quite’ mode will do is cut down the engine’s noise to almost half – from a food blender to the rumble of a dishwasher.

A wider range of customisation options will enable 2018 Ford Mustang GT customers to make even more of a statement. Three bold, dynamic new metallic paint colours are available – Kona Blue, Orange Fury and Royal Crimson. New 19-inch forged alloy wheels are offered in multiple finishes each with a unique character, including Nickel, Ebony Black and Polished Aluminium.

Mustang for the first time will also be offered with Adaptive Cruise Control and Distance Alert technologies that help drivers maintain an appropriate distance to the vehicle ahead, as well as Lane Departure Warning that can warn when drivers unintentionally drift out of lane, and Lane Keeping Aid that can apply torque to the steering wheel to steer the vehicle back into lane. The sophisticated technologies will contribute to an improved Euro NCAP rating safety rating.

While the details available are from the European spec Mustang, full details of what the Indian-spec’s equipment list will be known in a few months. Expect the new Mustang to be priced higher than the outgoing model at Rs 72 lakh, but even then the Mustang will continue to be the affordable sports car in India, more affordable than others that is.
