The only thing we know about KIA at this point is the fact that they are in the process of setting up operations in India and, the fact that they will be positioning their brand above Hyundai models in India. The question then remains as to what products are likely to be on the brands front-lines, and their product strategy is likely to be. Which brings us to the KIA Niro EV set to break cover at this year Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2018). Internationally the KIA Niro has already been on sale with a standard hybrid and a plug-in hybrid. But new reports emerging from KIA indicate that Niro Electric will be one of KIAs showpieces for the show.
We can see a new face/lighting scheme is being applied to the concept; this consists of some fancy-looking LEDs, plus a light-up badge and grille. The grille appears to showcase Kia’s “motion graphic” lighting technology (basically lights that change pattern and intensity) it will show at CES.
Although it will be impossible to say whether KIA will actually consider the Niro EV for India or not, or go via the Hybrid route first. However, if they do intend to stand apart from the Hyundai mother-brand as a more premium offering, KIA will need strong players in the EV and Hybrid segment. Cosmetically, KIA Niro electric does look a little different from its hybrid counterpart. It gets some new-age LEDs and an electric style light-badge from the grill.
We do however know that the Niro electric will be based on Hyundai’s Ioniq platform, and while we have said in the past that the Ioniq might be too premium for Hyundai to consider for the Indian market, the KIA Niro might be slightly less pricey once landed. The Ioniq has about 180 km of range from a single charge and makes 118 hp from its electric motor. It is likely that KIA might use the same platform but look to extend the range with a larger set of batteries, but it’s not expected to breach the 200 km mark.
However, we will have to wait until this year’s Auto Expo to fully grasp KIA’s roadmap for the sub-continent. 2032 all-electric goals considered the KIA Niro EV might actually make a great flagship for KIAs campaign in India.
