Yamaha might be looking to make inroads into the Indian electric two-wheeler in India. According to a PTI report, a top executive in Yamaha India said that they are looking to invest in power units for batteries and electric vehicles. The outcome of this study will determine whether it is in Yamaha’s best interest to completely replace combustion engines in their lineup with electric motors. “We are at present conducting a feasibility study in this area (electric two-wheelers). Yamaha has an edge in this segment as we already have such products in other countries. Transferring such products to India, it is not so difficult,” Yamaha Motor Research and Development India MD Yasuo Ishihara told PTI.”I believe that the EV products cannot be the complete replacement for the current internal combustion engines. This is one of the biggest study points,” Ishihara said.

However, despite this, Yamaha also said that in order to safeguard their position, Yamaha will also continue their development of the more tradition gas pluggers in the country. “We have already started our feasibility study in order to achieve this target set by the government of India but at the same time we will continue to develop more highly efficient engines in order to cater to the demands of Indian customers,” Ishihara said.
When asked about company’s investment plans in the EV space, he said: “Investment shall mainly be for power units and batteries. Infrastructure development in collaboration with some partners may be another area where we would look forward to making our investments”.
The push for EVs as preached by the present government comes on the back of rising pollution levels in the country, forcing the government to push for all EV production in India by 2032.
