Upping safety to the next level, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has announced that all two-wheelers must be equipped with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) from January 1, 2026. Currently, the rule is limited to two-wheelers with a 125cc engine capacity to be equipped with single-channel ABS. MoRTH has further mandated that two-wheeler dealerships must provide two BIS-certified helmets, one for the rider and the other for the pillion. The law, currently, states it’s compulsory for one.

Safety is a priority

According to the data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), over 1.96 crore two-wheelers were sold in Indian in FY26. Out of this total,1.53 crore vehicles were either 125cc or less two-wheelers, which accounts for a shade over 78% of the total sales. Based on these numbers, the under 125cc two-wheelers are expected to be pricier by at least Rs 2,000.

According to MoRTH, 44.5% of total accidents in 2022 involved two-wheelers, with a high number of head injuries. Due to this, the government has passed a mandate that all two-wheelers, irrespective of displacement capacity, will have to be equipped with ABS.

Importance of Anti-lock Braking System

The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) is a critical safety feature for motorcycles and scooters, preventing wheel lock-up during sudden or heavy braking. By modulating brake pressure, ABS ensures riders maintain control, significantly reducing the risk of skidding or losing balance, especially in emergencies or on slippery surfaces like wet roads. This technology shortens stopping distances compared to non-ABS bikes, which can be crucial for avoiding collisions.

Studies show that ABS-equipped motorcycles stop in much less space, enhancing rider safety. According to research, ABS can reduce crash rates by 35-45%, particularly in challenging conditions, by improving braking efficiency. This makes ABS an essential feature for modern two-wheelers, offering greater protection on the road, especially during unpredictable situations where quick, controlled stopping is vital for preventing accidents and ensuring rider stability.
