The Maharashtra government on Friday announced a reduction in the value added taxes (VAT) on diesel and petrol prices in Mumbai and adjoining areas including the municipal areas of Brihanmumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai.
While presenting Budget 2024 for Maharashtra yesterday, Deputy Chief Minister and state Finance Minister Ajit Pawar announced that the government will slash the value-added tax (VAT) on fuel in these areas which will make petrol cheaper by 65 paise per litre and diesel by Rs 2.60 per litre.
Pawar conceded that the decision will cost the state exchequer Rs 200 crore. The value-added tax (VAT) on petrol has been reduced to 25 percent plus Rs 5.12 additional tax from 26 per cent VAT plus Rs 5.12 additional tax. The latest price revision will come into effect by 1 July 2024.
Despite the latest cut in fuel prices, fuel prices in Mumbai remain one of the most expensive among all the other metropolitan cities in India. Let us compare the prices for fuel in Mumbai in comparison to the other four metros namely New Delhi, Kolkata, and Chennai.
