The 2018 Ford Expedition will be introduced with live TV show streamingConvenience features like electrically adjustable seats, heated wing mirrors or an infotainment system that mirrors your phone’s screen are all becoming part of most cars sold globally. But, sometimes, a manufacturer creates a benchmark for others to follow. In a segment first move, Ford is going to bring cable TV to its upcoming 2018 Expedition. Rear seats of the new Ford Expedition will have two 8-inch screens that will stream tv shows, similar to what is witnessed in business class or first class seating of an airline. These screens are integrated at the back of the front headrests and the system, known as EVO, works in sync with Slingplayer software which is embedded into the vehicle’s infotainment system.
For the live TV to work, the Slingplayer is connected to the Slingbox system and an active internet connection at the user’s home and this system syncs with the Slingplayer in the customer’s car which streams live TV shows. This feature is limited to the rear seat occupants, however, in case one does not want to invest in live TV streaming, the system also allows users to stream videos via their smartphones on these screens in addition to the DVD player and HDMI playback options. Although the 2018 Expedition has three-row seating, the system is offered only in the second row.

The 2018 Expedition will not come to India, however, the flagship SUV, the Endeavour may get an update with this technology. This is due to the fact that the company is evolving their SYNC systems which enable an occupant to connect their smartphone to a vehicle’s infotainment system. While there are a host of convenience features that aid the driver and the front passenger, the rear seats get somewhat neglected. However, a number of manufacturers are now bringing in technologies such as EVO to pamper the rear seat occupants and keep them entertained on the move. Now, you won’t have to miss your favourite TV show in case there is a traffic jam.
