Ford has finally taken the covers off of the all-electric vision of the best selling vehicle in America. Welcome, the Ford F-150 Lightning that is aimed squarely at Rivian R1T and Tesla Cybertruck. Ford has priced the F-150 Lightning at a jaw-dropping USD $41,699 (Rs 30.5 lakh) for the base model. At that price, Ford is trying to prove you don’t need to dump your life savings to buy an EV. The Lightning will go on sale in 2022.

The Ford F-150 is the best selling vehicle in America as has been holding that title for the last 44 years! With the first-ever electric F-150, Ford decided to revive the “Lightning” name which it previously used for the SVT-branded performance pickup truck which was discontinued in 2004. However, the standard ICE-powered F-150 will continue to be on sale.

The Lighting stays true to the F-150 signature look but uses a more flush aerodynamic design to reduce drag. It features cool new LED lighting and wheels (18, 20,22-inch sizes). It looks distinct, but clearly an F-150 with evident traces of the Mustang Mach-E as well.

The electric pick-up truck from Ford will only be available as a five-passenger four-door SuperCrew cab with a 5.5-foot bed. It has a total payload capacity of a total of 2,000lbs (907kgs). It is 400lbs (181kgs) more as the empty engine compartment can now be used as additional storage. It also has a towing capacity of 10,000lbs (4,535kgs).

The F-150 Lighting is equipped with dual inboard motors. The total power output from the motor with the extended battery offers 563hp and a whopping 1050Nm of torque and a driving range of 482.8kms. The standard battery model offers 426hp, and 370kms of range, but the torque output remains the same.

The F-150 Lightning has 11 outlets that can be used to charge up your power tools at a worksite, or toys at a campground. There are four 120-volt outlets and one 240-volt outlet places in the bed. The four other 120-volt outlets are placed in the frunk. Additionally, there are 10 USB ports as well. Should you lose power at your home, It can even power your house if required with Ford Intelligent Backup Power for 3-10 days.

To accommodate the dual motors for the standard 4×4, Ford is using a new independent rear suspension setup for the lightning. That means that the Lighting will handle better and offer better ride comfort. The bottom also features front and rear skid plates to protect the components when travelling off-road.

Ford believes that the F-150 could do 0-96.5 km/h (0-60m/h) in 4.4 seconds. That is some feat as the older generation Raptor performance model would take over 5 seconds.

In the cabin, the Lighting although uses a similar design to the regular F-150, the new EV platform allows for a whole new electronic architecture. RIght in the centre is the giant 15.5-inch touchscreen that allows access to a wealth of features and apps. It is of course a connected vehicle so it can get all the latest over the air updates among many other features that come with the system.
