The world is moving away from fuel powered cars, not only because they have been the primary cause of particulate matter in our city air, but because as technology evolves Electric Vehicles are becoming more and more reliable than their fuel powered counterparts. They have much less in the form of moving parts, they are lighter and there’s no noise. Thus far, India’s only taste of EVs has been from Mahindra with the E20 and the E-Verito!

Tata Tiago and Tigor Tata Motors made it to the news for securing a contract for 10,000 Electric Vehicles to be used by the Indian government and their agencies. The contract will see them deliver their first batch of EVs by November this year, the EV in question is Tata’s Tigor. Although we expect that the same technology will be brought out with the Tiago as well. The Tigor is likely to have a range above 150 km and is likely to hit Indian markets by mid-next year.

Tesla Model 3 Although it may be a while before Tesla start manufacturing in India, but even at the eye-watering 40 lakh price tag. Tesla’s “entry-level” EV has got a considerable number of pre-bookings in the sub-continent. The Model 3 is likely to make it to India by 2019, which is when the company intends to start delivering it. It's likely to have 300 km range and lots of neat EV tricks, although it will miss out on the Model S’s ludacris mode.

Mahindra KUV 100 Electric At the launch of the facelifted KUV 100 Mahindra assured customers that it would be followed by an electric KUV by next year. Mahindra were always more prepared in EVs than most other manufacturers, what with them already having two electric cars on sale in India, their participation in Formula E and general awareness towards EVs. The Mahindra KUV electric is likely to further consecrate their stand in the segment. It is likely to share its powertrain with the E-Verito.

Nissan Leaf Now it’s been a will-they won’t they situation with Nissan and their Leaf which Nissan first showcased in the 2012 Auto Expo. The company is yet to reveal whether they will bring the leaf to India, and whether they will bring it with intent to be competitive or as CBUs is also in question. The Leaf however is capable of 0-100 times of 8.8 seconds and a range of 400 kms on a single charge. That aside it is level-2 autonomous and gets cool features like Nissan’s E-pedal which functions allows the throttle pedal to both brake and accelerate.

Mean Metal Motors M-Zero And then there is the home-grown electric supercar, Mean Metal Motors an EV startup in Bangalore, has been working on a supercar called the M-Zero, which will be the first electric sports car from India. MMM has sa.id the M-Zero will have about 490 hp and will have 300kms of range, mutually exclusive of course. Prices are likely to start at Rs. 60 lakh, although we will have to wait till 2019 to see our first M-Zero. But boy does it look good!
