Hyundai Motor India recently launched the 2017 Grand i10 at a starting price of Rs 4.58 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi. The hatchback has received some cosmetic changes at front and considerable updates in interior. However, in order to increase its share in the B-segment, the car will have to hit it out against cars such as the Maruti Suzuki Swift and more importantly the upcoming 2017 Maruti Suzuki Swift, which will be launched within a span of few months. Here we pit the three cars against each other to understand the value-offering of the present Swift and to find out who will have a better chance at taking the leadership spot in the segment.

Design The 2017 Hyundai Grand i10 design is based on the company's signature Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design language and wears a Cascade Design front grille & redesigned bumper with LED DRL's. In order to improve the aerodynamics and NVH (Noise Vibration and Harshness) levels the new Grand i10 is now equipped with Air Curtain and overall, the car features a sharper and more energetic design comapred to its predecessor. Maruti Suzuki Swift was launched in India in 2005, and in 2014 the hatchback received significant changes inside the cabin along with an update to the exterior design. The company is planning to launch the 2017 Swift this year. The car is based on the company's 'HEARTECT' platform and hence it is lighter than the current generation Swift. The new Swift is going to be significantly different from the present one, especially at the rear and to us the design surely looks attractive.

Engine: The new 2017 Hyundai Grand i10 is powered by the same 1.2 litre petrol unit from the outgoing model but features a new 1.2 litre diesel engine. The petrol motor is mated to a 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic gearbox, while the diesel unit is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The all new Swift too is expected to carry the same 1.2 litre petrol unit and 1.3 litre diesel engine like the present generation Swift, although they might be in slightly different state of tune. It is expected that the all new Swift might get the SHVS( Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) technology as well in order to offer enhanced fuel-efficiency and lower emissions. This technology will give the all-new Maruti Suzuki Swift and edge over all of its competition, especially since vehicles with this technology are classified as Hybrids, thereby attracting some subsidies and benefits

Features: The 2017 Hyundai Grand i10 gets a host of features such as a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Mirror Link connectivity and navigation. The steering wheel has voice recognition button along with music and telephone controls. The current generation Swift is equipped with push start button, steering mounted control and automatic climate control. Apart from these features, the all new Swift will receive a sporty-looking flat-bottomed three-spoke steering wheel and instrument cluster with MID screen. The touchscreen will again offer Android Auto and Aple CarPlay along with the other usual connectivity options. Overall, the new Grand i10 is ahead of the present Swift in this area but with the new Swift's launch expected in a few months, the top spot could go to Maruti Suzuki.
-
Safety: The new Hyundai Grand i10 gets a rear parking assist system, dual front airbags, ABS (Anti-lock braking System), reverse parking sensors, and rear parking camera with the display and much more inside the cabin. The present Maruti Suzuki Swift comes equipped with safety features as Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) with EBD and driver and passenger air bags depending on the variant, while the all new Swift will feature airbags and Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) with EBD as standard equipment. In addition, it is expected that new Swift might get a cruise control system. On the safety front, the new Grand i10 presently scores higher but it will be matched soon by the upcoming Swift.

Price: Hyundai has launched the 2017 Grand i10 in a price range between Rs 4.58 lakh to Rs 7.32 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi. The old generation Swift LXi is available at a price of Rs 4.95 lakh and the top end Zdi is sold at price of Rs 7.60 lakh. The all new Swift is expected to be priced higher than the current generation Swift but will also have more features. Overall, from a value-for-money perspective, the new Grand i10 is the winner in the present scenario due to its more modern features and styling. However, for those looking for a sporty car to drive, the Swift still makes more sense. With the new Swift being launched, expect the game to roll towards Maruti Suzuki, provided they get the pricing right.
