For the second time in a row, Tata Motors beats Hyundai in retail sales, as per numbers by FADA. In December 2023, Tata Motors sold 43,859 units, while Hyundai sold 39,501 units. Tata’s YoY recorded a growth of 17.9 percent, while Hyundai registered a 5.9 percent decline in YoY growth.
For Tata Motors, its SUV range has become popular, as with the overall trend where customers prefer SUV sales compared to hatchbacks or sedans. This is further proof as in December 2023, the best-selling vehicle was the Tata Nexon, beating popular models such as the Wagon R and the Dzire in sales.
The Tata Nexon’s biggest advantage is the multiple powertrains on offer, catering to a wide customer base. Tata’s second-best-seller, the Punch was the third-beset-selling model, registering sales of 13,787 units.
For Hyundai, the best-seller was the Venue, which sold 10,383 units, settling for 9th place in the list of top 20 selling cars in December. Hyundai’s popular vehicle, the Creta, registered sales of 9,243 units, settling for 13th place, with a sales decline of 9 percent.
However, fortunes could soon change for Hyundai as the updated Creta will be launched in a few days – on January 16 – and put Hyundai back on the list as India’s second-largest carmaker after Maruti Suzuki. Tata Motors also has plans for multiple launches this year, mostly EVs, such as the Harrier/Safari EV and the Curvv concept. Bookings for the Tata Punch EV are also open, making the carmaker’s EV portfolio strong.
