The BMW 8-series might be one of the most pivotal BMWs in the pipeline for this year. The reason we know this is because BMW who have been unscrupulously callous with protecting the privacy of the BMW 8-series prototype. First the images were leaked ahead of the concept show, then they made such a glorious racket while they were testing it on the ‘ring’ that now we all know what it sounds like to. Putting the final nail in the 8-series coffin of secrecy, was the production-spec 8-series, that leaked on the BMW fan site Bimmerpost.com. Either ways for us auto-boffin who spend our days trolling the web for images and leaks like this, it’s a gold mine. From what we can tell, the 8-series has a lot of styling cues from the 6-series coupe that inspired it. Strangely it does have a lot of the sharp edges that we saw on the 8-series concept that showed up last year, it’s a lot smoother and looks slightly more sedate. Although in no-way boring.
The rear also gets some fancy treatment with the flowing LED lamps in the tail that adds to the hot coupe design. Interestingly the 850i 8-series which seem to be the car in the leaked images is also a xDrive all-wheel drive as well. BMW will also be bringing a four door 8-series which they call the Gran Coupe, which we can only hope will get a V12 like it’s following namesake.
There is a word on the grapevine that the new 8-series will go on sale internationally this summer, so it might be expected to break cover at the Geneva Motor Show or New York Auto Show. While BMW India is yet to confirm or announce anything in terms of the sale.
