Most in India will know the Interceptor as the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 which was launched in 2018, however, the motorcycle goes a long way back. This is not the first time Royal Enfield have built a parallel twin engine. The original Interceptor was introduced in 1960 with a 692cc engine. (Source: Silodrome)

In 1962, Royal Enfield rolled out the 750 Interceptor which went through substantial generation changes before going out of production in 1970. The model pictured here is a 1968 model which was cosmetically restored in 2017 but also has a new clutch, brakes, tyres and cables.

The Royal Enfield Interceptor was the most powerful and the fastest Royal Enfield ever to have been built in 1960 and was targeted at the North American market for desert and off-road racing segment which was dominated by the likes of Triumph, BSA and Norton.

The original Royal Enfield Interceptor was popular with their owners and racers, however, it never sold in numbers. But that thankfully never stopped the engineers at RE from upgrading the motorcycle which by 1967 had a coil ignition, a new seat, new instrument mounts, new handlebar, new chrome fuel tank and more.

Owing to the fact that the original Interceptor never grew very popular in sales numbers, it is much rarer to find one in good condition than its period competitors. Pictured here is a 1968 Series 1A Interceptor in rather a good shape and is now up for an auction at Mecum Auctions in July.
