Apple has launched the CarPlay Ultra in complete style, as it is currently only available in new Aston Martin vehicles in the U.S. and Canada. In the coming weeks, the next-generation Apple infotainment system will be available for existing models through a software update. Many other automakers around the world are working to bring CarPlay Ultra to drivers, including newly committed brands Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis.
“The next generation of CarPlay gives drivers a smarter, safer way to use their iPhone in the car, deeply integrating with the vehicle while maintaining the very best of the automaker. We are thrilled to begin rolling out CarPlay Ultra with Aston Martin, with more manufacturers to come,” said Bob Borchers, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.
Here’s all you need to know about the new Apple CarPlay Ultra.
Vehicle-based information
CarPlay Ultra provides content for all the driver’s screens, including the instrument cluster, with options for the speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, temperature gauge, and more, bringing a consistent look and feel to the entire driving experience. Drivers can choose to show information from their iPhone, like maps and media, along with information that comes from the car, such as advanced driver assistance systems and tire pressure, right in the instrument cluster.

Multiple infotainment control options
Drivers can use onscreen touch controls, physical buttons, or Siri to manage both standard vehicle functions like the car’s infotainment system and the climate control. The CarPlay Ultra can further be used for vehicle-specific features and controls like sound system configurations or performance settings. It now sports widgets powered by iPhone that fit the car’s touch screen or gauge cluster and can easily be read on the go.
Customisable for each car maker
Apple has ensured that the platform of the CarPlay Ultra is flexible and is able to be customised based on a carmaker’s design ethos and theme. The unique themes are crafted in collaboration between Apple and the automaker’s design team, resulting in a tailor-made feel and experience. The CarPlay Ultra can be further personalised with colours and wallpapers of themes.
Commenting on the CarPlay Ultra, Aston Martin CEO, Adrian Hallmark said, “Aston Martin is delighted to have collaborated with Apple, and to be the first to launch CarPlay Ultra. As a brand, our focus on world-leading performance goes beyond the traditional attributes associated with powertrains, dynamic performance and craftsmanship.
