Overview

India’s insurance sector is on a strong growth trajectory and is expected to emerge as the fastest-growing market among G20 nations over the next five years, according to the Economic Survey 2025. Total insurance premium volumes, across both life and non-life segments, are expected to rise by an average of 7.3% annually from 2025 to 2029, according to Swiss Re. This growth is underpinned by robust macroeconomic fundamentals, accelerating digitalisation, and a supportive regulatory environment.

However, the insurance industry faces a period of profound transformation. A convergence of geopolitical, socio-economic, business, and technological forces is challenging established business models. Key issues include evolving customer expectations, climate change, and geopolitical uncertainties. The sector must also address underwriting risks linked to increasing life expectancy and an aging population, as well as growing concerns about misselling, delayed claims, and cybersecurity threats.
