The need for self-reliance in the defence sector has long been realised and has been given fresh impetus by the defence ministries' third positive indigenisation list. However long-standing delays have been an issue plaguing the Indian armed forces.

The feasibility of complete indigenisation along with the timelines are still questionable, and the stakeholders need to spend time to chalk this out clearly.

However, reports indicate India will possibly not import any defence item in the future. The Ministry of Defence is laying stepping stones for 'Atamanirbharta' in defence by indigenization in defence equipment.

Several bold steps have been taken by the government towards encouraging domestic manufacturing in the defence sector. It has worked to reduce the defence import bill—between 2011-15 and 2016-20, the bill came down by a third.

In this webinar organised by Express Defence, industry stakeholders and policymakers will come together to discuss the role of private players in making India self-reliant in defence manufacturing, role of public sector, challenges faced by the industry and outlook of the sector in mid to long term.
