A day-long green tourism conclave will be held on October 19 in Shillong with an aim to promote responsible tourism initiatives in Northeast.

Organised by The Indian Express Online Media Services, in association with the Ministry of Tourism, the Green Tourism India Conclave 2023 aims to catalyse discussions, ignite innovative thinking, and set the agenda for the future of tourism in the Northeast. Meghalaya Tourism will be the presenting partner.

The event will also be in line with the ‘Travel for LiFE’ program, launched by Ministry of Tourism under Mission LiFE to bring large-scale behavioural change amongst tourists and tourism businesses, significantly impacting environmental protection and climate action.

Known for its breathtaking natural beauty and ecological diversity, the Northeast requires a special kind of tourism that would be sensitive to the enviornment and local communities. To that effect, the conclave will bring together key stakeholders from both the government and private sectors, including tour operators, hoteliers, community tourism leaders, practitioners, and domain experts.

Participants will include individuals and organisations based in the Northeast as well as those from across India who have expertise in the region.

The event will also showcase a performance by the Da Thymmei, a local cultural group from Meghalaya. There will also be a presentation of a case study on ‘Tourism in Meghalaya: Challenges and Opportunities’ by Gerald Samuel Duia, General Secretary, Tour Operators Association of Meghalaya.

Discussions are also planned on the following topics:

  • The Great Outdoors: What makes the Northeast the perfect destination for adventure and eco-tourism
  • Community tourism and homestays in the Northeast: How well has the model worked
  • Luxury Tourism: Is high value, low impact responsible tourism the way forward for the Northeast
  • Tourism in the Northeast: Opportunities, challenges, solutions and road ahead
