Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese married his long-time partner Jodie Haydon in a private ceremony at The Lodge on Saturday, becoming the first sitting PM in the country’s history to wed while in office. The event, kept tightly under wraps by his office, was attended only by close family members, friends, select cabinet colleagues and friends.

Albanese later confirmed the marriage by posting a short video on X with the caption “Married”marking the couple’s first public announcement following the ceremony.

In a joint statement released to the media, as quoted by Reuters, the couple mentioned they were “absolutely delighted to share our love and commitment to spending our future lives together, in front of our  family and closest friends.”

Who is Jodie Haydon?

Haydon, who has been one of the Albanese’s most consistent public companions in recent years, first met the prime minister at a public event in Melbourne more than five years ago, as reported by The Guardian. She has since appeared alongside him at major national and international events, including his 2022 and 2025 election campaigns, a White House state dinner hosted by then US President Joe Biden and Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.

The couple’s relationship deepened after Albanese survived a serious car accident in 2021, an incident Haydon had earlier stated made her realise the depth of her feelings, as reported by ABC.

A private ceremony

The private wedding included several personal details. Haydon was walked down the aisle by her parents, Bill and Pauline, to Ben Folds’ song “The Luckiest.” She was wearing a gown designed by the Sydney label Romance Was Born, whereas Albanese wore a suit from MJ Bale.

Haydon’s five-year-old niece Ella, served as the flower girl, and Albanese’s dog Toto, acted as the ring bearer. The couple exchanged vows, which they wrote themselves. Both of them got married by a celebrant from the NSW Central Coast, as The Guardian reported.

After the ceremony, they walked back down the aisle to Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours)”, and they performed their first dance on Frank Sinatra’s “The Way You Look Tonight.”

Cabinet Ministers, including Jim Chalmers, Katy Gallagher, Richard Marles and Penny Wong, were among the guests, along with family members, including Albanese’s son Nathan.

The couple will honeymoon in Australia next week.
