The freeze on USAID funding has put a hold on $268 million intended to support “independent media and the free flow of information” for the year. Recently, USAID had highlighted its support for over 6,000 journalists, approximately 700 independent newsrooms, and nearly 300 media-focused civil society groups across around 30 countries.

However, according to Reporters Without Borders (RSF), the full impact of this freeze remains difficult to assess, as many recipients are hesitant to speak out, fearing potential political backlash or jeopardizing future funding.
