In response to the winter snow storm Fern, supermarkets and food retailers across the US have issued warnings aimed at preventing panic buying and hoarding, which has already led to emptied shelves in many areas.

Retailers are advising shoppers to focus only on necessary supplies and avoid bulk purchases that could lead to shortages and harm vulnerable community members such as the elderly or those with limited mobility, Marca reported.

Which items should people stock up on?

Supermarkets emphasised the importance of stocking up on non‑perishable and shelf‑stable food items that can sustain families through possible disruptions caused by severe weather.

Recommended food supplies include canned meats such as tuna or chicken, peanut butter and jelly, canned soups and pasta, cereal and granola bars, dried fruit and nuts, powdered milk, and instant coffee or tea.

In addition to food, experts highlight the need to prepare essential drinks and hydration supplies.

As a basic guideline, individuals were encouraged to store at least one gallon of water per person per day for a minimum of three days, along with electrolyte drinks or juices that can help maintain hydration if access to fresh water becomes limited. Ice may also be useful for preserving food if electricity is lost.

Which emergency items should households have?

The National Weather Service (NWS) recommend that households also include other emergency items in their preparations, such as flashlights with extra batteries, portable radios, first‑aid kits, necessary medications, diapers or formula for infants, additional fuel for heating, and pet food. Staying informed through official weather updates and following local safety instructions were key amid the impending storm.

Which states are affected?

At least 18 states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, have declared a state of emergency so far, according to The Weather Channel.

With damaging ice and substantial snowfall poised to impact the nation, forecasters from the Weather Company in the US have estimated that over 230 million Americans may be affected by what they are now referring to as the “catastrophic” Winter Storm Fern.

‘Avoid unnecessary travel’

While some regions may experience the brunt of Fern’s snowfall and freezing rain, others could face hazardous travel conditions or extended power outages. Residents are being urged to avoid unnecessary travel, keep devices charged, and ensure that family members and pets are accounted for and safe, according to The Weather Channel.
