US President Donald Trump‘s administration is sending ‘border czar’ Tom Homan to Minnesota to manage US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)’s on-the-ground operations there in the wake of Alex Pretti’s killing, Trump confirmed.
“Tom is tough but fair, and will report directly to me,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.
Who is ‘border czar’ Tom Homan?
Homan is a prominent American immigration enforcement official and law‑and‑order figure who has spent more than three decades in US border and immigration roles, beginning as a Border Patrol agent and rising through the ranks of federal immigration agencies.
He served as acting director of ICE from January 2017 to June 2018 and became well‑known for advocating strict immigration policies, including deportations and tougher enforcement measures.
After leaving federal service, he worked as a commentator and in conservative policy circles, and in the 2020s was designated by President Donald Trump as his administration’s “border czar” to oversee and push a hard‑line immigration agenda.
Why is Trump sending him to Minnesota now?
Following the shootings of Pretti and 37-year-old American citizen Renee Nicole Good, there has been considerable backlash from citizens and lawmakers alike. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz appealed to Trump to take stringent action immediately and ensure “humane, focused, effective immigration control”.
In a recent interview, Trump told The Wall Street Journal that his administration is “reviewing everything” related to Pretti’s death and that federal agents would leave the Minneapolis area “at some point,” although he did not specify a timeline or conditions for such a withdrawal.
Further, Trump had earlier made massive allegations of fraud in Minnesota. In a social media post, Trump had accused state leaders and protesters of diverting attention from what he characterised as a “massive 20 Billion Dollar, Plus, Welfare Fraud” in Minnesota. He linked the protests and unrest on the streets to this alleged fraud, which he said was “at least partially responsible” for the demonstrations.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt in a separate social media post also said that Homan will coordinate with ongoing investigations into fraud schemes in Minnesota.
