A 39-year-old woman from Ripley, West Virginia, has been arrested after allegedly using social media to recruit individuals to pursue and assassinate US President Donald Trump, authorities confirmed on Sunday.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department said the woman, identified as Morgan Morrow, was taken into custody following an investigation into her online recruitment efforts and is now being held at the South Central Regional Jail in West Virginia.
Deputies said Morrow was charged with one count of terroristic threats in connection with the case.
The sheriff’s office posted on Facebook that the arrest resulted from a “detailed evening investigation” carried out by local law enforcement and the Jackson County Bureau of Investigations.
“This is not meant to be a political-oriented statement,” the department said, emphasising that it is an active criminal investigation into “documented and troubling concerns.”
Authorities have not yet disclosed whether any others were identified or approached in connection with the alleged plot.
Who is Morgan Morrow?
According to an X post shared by Libs of TikTok, Morrow worked as a librarian at the Jackson County Public Library.
Morgan’s Facebook profile reportedly described her as offering “friendly and patient customer service” and noted that she had been a full-time mother for more than a decade.
Morrow’s motives not yet known
Details about her motives or state of mind have not been made public, and it is not yet clear if Morrow had any known criminal history prior to this incident.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department said further details would be released as the investigation continues, and prosecutors will determine whether additional charges are appropriate as the case develops.
Morrow’s arrest comes in the wake of heightened national tension around political violence and threats against high-profile figures.
American law makes soliciting violence against the President a serious federal and state crime, and authorities take such cases seriously due to their potential implications for national security.
No bond has been set for Morrow yet and she remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.
