A deadly winter storm that brought massive snowfall across the US knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of people in the South and crippled travel in the Northeast. At least 35 people have died due to the adverse weather conditions, with 220 million Americans on alert for extreme cold, ABC News reported.

Millions of people have been told to stay indoors as schools remain closed, travel is badly disrupted and hundreds of thousands of homes are still without power. While conditions have improved slightly since the weekend in some areas, authorities say the danger is far from over.

The worst impact is being felt in the southern states, where ice buildup has snapped tree branches and brought down power lines. But the storm is no longer limited to the South. Power cuts are now spreading into parts of the mid-Atlantic, widening the outage map by the hour.

Stretching nearly 2,000 miles from the southern Rockies to New England, the storm has forced emergency declarations in almost 20 states and placed more than 140 million people under winter weather warnings. The storm forced a power grid emergency in parts of the Midwest, led to widespread travel chaos, and is expected to bring heavy snowfall to cities like New York and Boston.  Hundreds of thousands of people could lose electricity and some may be without power for several days.

Early Saturday, the Midcontinent Independent System Operator, which manages electricity supply across parts of the Midwest and the South, declared an energy emergency in its northern and central regions. This alert means there is not enough power to meet demand, so authorities may use backup power sources and ask people to reduce electricity use.

Conditions on the ground remain dangerous. Heavy and “catastrophic” ice buildup has made roads extremely slippery, turning even short journeys into risky trips and bringing daily life in many areas to a standstill.

US sees massive flight disruptions – Check cancellation, delay status here

The impact has been severe, especially on travel. Airlines have faced one of their worst disruptions in years, with close to 15,000 flights canceled between Friday and Monday, CNN reported citing data from FlightAware.

More than 9,100 flights were canceled on Sunday alone. About 43% of American Airlines flights, based in Dallas, were grounded, along with 35% of Delta Air Lines flights from Atlanta. Both cities are expected to face dangerous weather conditions, according to a report by CNN.

On Saturday, over 4,000 flights were canceled, mainly in Dallas and Charlotte. By Monday, more than 1,600 flights had already been canceled, with the worst impact expected in northern cities like New York and Boston, the report mentioned.

Extended weather forecast: Record snow and arctic cold

Weather experts say the storm will be at its strongest from Sunday evening into early Monday morning. A wide stretch of heavy snow is expected to cover cities from Oklahoma City to Boston, with some parts of the Northeast preparing for 15 to 30 inches of snowfall, according to the local media reports.

After the snow and ice move through, a blast of Arctic air is likely to spread across the country, dropping temperatures 30-50 degrees below normal. Forecasters warn that wind chills in the Midwest and Great Plains could fall to as low as -40 degrees fahrenheit, creating life-threatening conditions and causing a sudden flash freeze on roads that are already icy.

US Weather LIVE: Another winter storm possible this weekend

The National Weather Service warned that another major winter storm could hit the eastern US next weekend.

In a post on X, it said the “potential is increasing,” though it is still too early to know how severe it might be. Updates are expected throughout the week.

For now, officials say the message is clear: stay warm, stay indoors when possible, and look out for neighbours as the deep freeze continues.

US Weather LIVE: Frostbite and hypothermia risks remain high

Health officials warned that the extreme cold increases the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

Hypothermia happens when the body temperature drops dangerously low. Frostbite most commonly affects fingers and toes, but can also damage ears, cheeks and even eyelashes.

“Frostbite is deep tissue damage,” said Mike Dinn of the British Antarctic Survey. “You freeze all your flesh, and effectively those digits just die.”

He said early signs, known as frostnip, can appear within minutes, turning skin white and waxy. Because people may not notice it themselves, checking on others is crucial.

She warned of strong wind chills and serious frostbite risks. “We’re worried about frostbite,” she said, urging residents to dress warmly and check on neighbours.

Despite the storm, Healey said the power grid has largely held up. “We were ready, our teams were ready, and our state was ready,” she said.

Flores herself is among those without power. With four teenagers at home, she described the situation simply: “No heating, no internet, no coffee.”

She said roads are so icy that even four-wheel-drive vehicles are sliding. “There are many trees down and power lines blocking the roads,” she added.

US Weather LIVE: Power outages leave thousands in the cold

Across the US, nearly 780,000 customers were still without electricity as of Monday evening, according to poweroutage.us.

Tennessee was the hardest-hit state, with over 247,000 homes and businesses without power. Mississippi followed with more than 153,000 outages, while Louisiana, Texas, Kentucky, South Carolina, Georgia and Virginia also reported tens of thousands without electricity.

In Oxford, Mississippi, Mayor Robyn Tannehill said crews were working around the clock to restore power and clear roads. “I know people are frustrated and cold,” she said.

She warned that roads remain dangerous, especially hills and highway ramps. “Don’t let the sunshine give a false sense of security,” she said. “The bitter cold last night did us no favours.”

Warming shelters have been opened, with special focus on helping elderly residents reach them safely.

US Weather LIVE: Deep freeze keeps grip on US as power grid comes under strain

A deep freeze continues to grip large parts of the United States even as the worst winter storm of the season begins to ease. The extreme cold has pushed the country’s largest power grid into emergency mode, with officials warning of record-breaking electricity demand.

PJM Interconnection, which supplies power to about 67 million people across a wide stretch from New Jersey to Chicago, declared a grid emergency for Tuesday, according to Bloomberg. The operator said electricity demand is expected to cross 147 gigawatts, the highest level ever recorded during winter.

Power use is being driven up as millions turn to heating to cope with the freezing temperatures. Grid officials warned the pressure may not ease soon. Another blast of cold air is forecast for Friday, which could keep electricity demand above 140 gigawatts through the end of the month.

To put that figure in perspective, 140 gigawatts is roughly equal to the output of 140 large nuclear power plants running at full capacity. With temperatures staying well below normal, energy officials say the system will remain under close watch in the days ahead.

US Weather LIVE: Eight deaths reported in New York

City Hall confirmed that eight people died in New York since Friday, bringing the nationwide death toll linked to the storm to 20. Officials said it is still too early to confirm whether cold weather directly caused the deaths.

An official told CBS News that six people were found overnight on Friday, one overnight Saturday and another overnight Sunday. The New York Police Department said it is investigating seven of the deaths.

In a statement, City Hall said, “We can confirm that several of these individuals have had contact with [homeless] shelter and/or street outreach services in the past.”

US Weather LIVE: Winter storm death toll reaches 20

Freezing weather is set to stay across large parts of the eastern United States as a powerful winter storm continues to affect daily life. Officials say at least 20 deaths have been linked to the extreme cold and heavy snowfall, though investigations are still ongoing in several cases.

Millions of people have been told to stay indoors as schools remain closed, travel is badly disrupted and hundreds of thousands of homes are still without power. While conditions have improved slightly since the weekend in some areas, authorities say the danger is far from over.

Kentucky Governor Andrew Beshear said the storm system has mostly moved out of his state, but warned residents to remain alert. “We are not in the clear yet,” he said, pointing to the continuing risk from bitter cold.

The National Weather Service said a “deep freeze” will affect the eastern two-thirds of the country throughout the week. “Frigid temperatures will impact the eastern two-thirds of the US this week, and numerous record lows are forecast,” it said.

Snowfall is expected to ease in most places, with the worst of it shifting toward eastern Canada by Tuesday.

New York City experienced a historic snowfall on Sunday as Central Park recorded 11.4 inches of snow, setting a new daily record. This broke the previous record of 10 inches, which had stood since 1905, according to the National Weather Service New York.

People took to the snow to enjoy winter fun, sledding on Cedar Hill in Central Park despite the cold.

The deep freeze gripping the northern United States shows no signs of letting up. Normally, after a winter storm, temperatures rise above freezing within a few days, helping to melt snow and ice. But this extreme arctic air mass is expected to stick around.

Weather forecasts, as per CNN, indicate that no high temperatures north of the Mason-Dixon line will rise above freezing through late this week. Residents of the mid-Atlantic, Upper Midwest, and Northeast should expect to wait until early February for any significant thaw.
