US President Donald Trump has triggered a new political storm after posting an AI-generated image of himself on Truth Social holding a placard that read, “TRUMP 2028, YES!”. Shared with the caption “TRUMPLICANS!”, the post has once again renewed debate around US presidential term limits and whether Trump is deliberately teasing ambitions that the country’s Constitution bars.

The post comes nearly ten months into Trump’s historic second non-consecutive term, which began on January 20. Backed by Republican control of both the Senate and House, the administration has pressed ahead with its “America First 2.0” agenda, including tougher immigration measures and steep tariffs aimed at reshaping global trade.

Slogan that keeps returning

Though the image was AI-generated, the “Trump 2028” messaging has appeared repeatedly throughout the year on rally signs, campaign-style merchandise and even inside the Oval Office. In September, the president shared photos of “Trump 2028” hats placed on his desk during a meeting with Democratic leaders.

House Speaker Mike Johnson downplayed any constitutional challenge, insisting Trump is joking more than campaigning. “There is the 22nd Amendment…I think the president knows,” Johnson said, referring to the rule limiting presidents to two terms. Trump has also publicly acknowledged the restriction and said, “I’m not allowed to run. It’s too bad.”

Successor speculation grows

The post came amid growing chatter about who will carry the Republican mantle after 2028. In the past, Trump has said that he can support Vice President JD Vance or Secretary of State Marco Rubio for next President but polling shows Donald Trump Jr. gaining traction among GOP primary voters.

In August, Trump suggested Vance was the “most likely” option but also hinted at a possible Vance-Rubio alliance. “It’s too early to say. I’d like to run…I have the best poll numbers I’ve ever had,” he said.
