Kai Trump, the 18-year-old eldest granddaughter of US president Donald Trump, has come under fire after speaking about her “dream job” on social media. During an Instagram Q&A, Kai, who has over 1.4 million subscribers on YouTube and is set to play golf at the University of Miami, said she is already doing what she loves.
“I am already living it”
Responding to a question about her future, Kai said her ideal career includes playing golf, creating content, building a business and travelling the world. She described her current lifestyle, mixing social media, sport and entrepreneurship as her dream. In a post she captioned, “I love social media, golf, and business!”
In a video response, she said, “My dream job is literally what I’m doing now. “Playing golf, social media, entertaining, creating my own business. I think that’s my dream job. Travelling the world, meeting new people, is probably my dream job.”
Internet calls her out for being ‘out of touch’
The response did not sit well with many online. Critics were to question whether what she described counts as a job at all. Some called her take “delusional,” while others said it sounded like “no job” or “basically being unemployed.” A few also pointed to her privileged background, saying it shapes how she views work.
Questions raised over her university plans
Her comments also led to questions about why she plans to attend college if she already believes she’s living her dream. Some users asked what role education would play in her journey, given her current path. Not everyone agreed with the backlash. Several users defended Kai, saying managing a personal brand, running a business and consistently creating content is real work. Others said she shouldn’t be judged so harshly at 18, especially when she’s still figuring things out.
TikTok video adds to the criticism
This isn’t the first time Kai has faced online heat recently. Earlier this month, she was criticised for posting a lighthearted TikTok video while tensions around the Iran war were rising. In the clip, filmed in her Palm Beach bedroom, she lip-synced to ABBA’s “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!” and showed off her outfit. Some users slammed the video as poorly timed, calling it tone-deaf given global concerns and rising fuel prices. Others, however, argued that she shouldn’t be expected to respond to geopolitical events and is simply using her platform like any other teenager.
