Donald Trump lashed out at members of his own Republican Party late Friday night after the US Supreme Court struck down his sweeping tariff policy in a 6–3 decision. In an angry post on Truth Social, Trump accused fellow Republicans of failing to stand by him. “Republicans are so disloyal to themselves!” he wrote. “Unite, stick together, and WIN! President DJT.”
The remarks appeared to target conservative justices who sided with the majority opinion, including two he had appointed to the bench,Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett. The ruling held that Trump had overstepped his legal authority in imposing broad tariffs.
Court ruling deals major setback
The Supreme Court’s decision is a major setback for Trump’s trade agenda. The court ruled that the president did not have the authority to impose the sweeping duties under the laws cited by his administration. The decision was seen as a victory for businesses and US states that had challenged the tariffs. It also opened the door to potentially billions of dollars in refunds, though Trump showed that any repayments would likely face a long legal fight.
Speaking from the White House, Trump said justices who voted against his tariff policy “should be ashamed of themselves.” He called the ruling “ridiculous” and said the administration would now begin an “adjustment process.”
“Those members of the Supreme Court who voted against our very acceptable and proper method of TARIFFS should be ashamed of themselves,” Trump said. “Their decision was ridiculous but, now the adjustment process begins, and we will do everything possible to take in even more money than we were taking in before!”
Praise for conservative dissenters
While criticising the majority, Trump thanked the three conservative justices who dissented Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Brett Kavanaugh.
“I would like to thank and congratulate Justices Thomas, Alito, and Kavanaugh for your Strength, Wisdom, and Love of our Country,” Trump wrote. He claimed that when reading the dissenting opinions, “there is no way that anyone can argue against them.”
Trump also accused the majority of being influenced by “Foreign Interests” and political movements, calling some members of the court “FOOLS” and “LAPDOGS.”
Regardless of the ruling, Trump announced he would move forward using other legal avenues to impose tariffs. On Friday, he introduced a 10 percent tariff on all countries, signaling he was not backing down from his trade agenda.
“We have alternatives — great alternatives and we’ll be a lot stronger for it,” he said.
Trump has long argued that tariffs encourage investment and manufacturing in the United States. But Friday’s ruling brings fresh uncertainty into global trade policy and sets up what could be a prolonged legal and political battle, not just with Democrats, but within his own party.
