Queen Elizabeth II Dies, Britain Queen Elizabeth death Latest News Live: Britain’s longest-serving monarch Queen Elizabeth died at her Scotland home in Balmoral on Thursday. Britain’s figurehead for over seven decades was 96. Her last public appearance was on Tuesday, September 6, when she welcomed the United Kingdom’s new prime minister Liz Truss to her home. In a somber statement, Buckingham Palace said that the Queen passed away peacefully at Balmoral castle. Reports suggest that almost all of the British royalty including her son Prince Charles, heir apparent, were by her side in the last hour.

All parliamentary meetings and business have reportedly been postponed for the next 10 days. King Charles III will address the UK today. According to a PTI report, an Accession Council will proclaim King Charles as the new sovereign, which will be read at St. James’s Palace and the Royal Exchange in London.

Following the Queen’s death on Thursday, her eldest son Charles became monarch of the United Kingdom and the head of state of 14 other realms including Australia, New Zealand, Tuvalu, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea.

WHAT LIES AHEAD?

Since the Queen breathed her last at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, her body will be carried to London by a royal train. the whole process is being dubbed as ‘Operation Unicorn’. ‘Operation Lion’ refers to the Queen’s coffin being transferred from Buckingham Palace to the Palace of Westminster via a ceremonial route through London, reported PTI. The coffin is expected to lie in state where thousands of people are expected to arrive and pay their respects. The State Funeral is expected at Westminster Abbey in London.

No official details have been released about what will happen over the coming days, but it is anticipated that the Queen will be given a full state funeral, as is traditional to mark the death of a monarch.

As Prince Charles becomes king, the order of succession, as per an AP report, for Britain’s monarchy would be as follows:

  1. Prince William, the eldest son of Charles and the late Princess Diana. He is married to Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge. Their three children follow him in the line of succession.
  2. Prince George of Cambridge, born in July 2013.
  3. Princess Charlotte of Cambridge, born in May 2015.
  4. Prince Louis of Cambridge, born in April 2018.
  5. Prince Harry, the younger son of Charles and Diana.
  6. Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, born to Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, in May 2019.
  7. Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor, born in June 2021.
  8. Prince Andrew, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s second-eldest son.
  9. Princess Beatrice, elder daughter of Andrew and his former wife, Sarah Ferguson.
