Pakistan has launched the celebrations for its 70th Independence Day with the launch of a new official logo to mark the event. The colourful logo was chosen by Pakistan’s Information Minister Maryam Aurangzeb from 400 entries submitted by over 200 artistes. The artistes were told to make a logo which would reflect the ‘cultural diversity of the country’. The entry selected by the minister is a crescent moon and star motif with the number 70 emboldened on the logo. The colourful moon and star are supposed to represent, celebrate and promote the cultural diversity of Pakistan. Saba Zaman, the woman who envisioned the logo was awarded Rs 5 lakh (Pakistani) for her winning design. All was well till the Pakistani social media users started trolling Aurangzeb and Zaman.
A social media user stated that he could have done a better job at designing the logo had he been a full time designer. Another social media user said that the design was so half hearted that even the artist wouldn’t have thought that she would win the competition. Meanwhile, Zaman has responded well to the criticism and stated that she initially felt hurt by the negativity, but the negativity has now made her a stronger person. Zaman posted a statement on Facebook which read, ”Those who think they could have done a better job should know that the competition was open to all and any one could have submitted an entry. Those who are now criticising me should have taken part in the competitiion and submitted a better entry. Thanks for your criticism, it has only made me stronger”.
