Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella decries hate crimes, says violence has no place in society

The attack on mosques in New Zealand stunned the world as the shooter livestreamed incident for nearly 17 minutes on social media and also released a detailed manifesto filled with racist sentiments.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has reacted to the increase in hate crimes all over the world. His comment comes in the wake of attacks at two mosque in New Zealand’s Christchurch that left 50 people dead. In a tweet shared on Sunday morning, India-born Nadella said there was no place for hate and violence in the society as he conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved families.

In one of the worst incidents of hate crimes in the recent times, a gunman stormed a mosque and went on a shooting rampage on Friday. He opened indiscriminate fire on people who had gathered for Friday prayers. The incident left 50 people dead including two Microsoft techies Atta Elayyan and Syed Jahandad Ali.

In his message, Nadella also mourned their demise as he noted that Elayyan and Ali were part of Microsoft MVP and partner communities.

“Hate and violence have no place in our society. We mourn all the victims of the horrific attack in New Zealand including Atta Elayyan and Syed Jahandad Ali, who were part of our Microsoft MVP and partner communities. Our hearts are with the victims’ families and loved ones,” wrote Nadella.


Elayyan was CEO and co-founder of Lazyworm Applications, while Ali was a senior dynamics developer at Intergen.

The incidents of hate crimes against Muslims have seen a rising trend in last few years. The attack on mosques in New Zealand was appeared to be motivated by white supremacy and anti-immigrant ideology.
