A car hit multiple pedestrians in the British city of Derby on Saturday night — leaving several people hospitalised with serious injuries. The incident took place around 9:30 pm on Saturday and the UK police said they had taken the suspected driver into custody. Officials said the area had been closed to commuters and the investigation remained in early stages.
“Police officers stopped a vehicle believed to have been involved in the incident shortly after it happened. The driver, a man in his 30s, was arrested and is in police custody. Our investigation is in its early stages but we want to hear from anyone who saw a black Suzuki Swift being driven in Derby around the time of the incident,” read an excerpt from the statement released by Derbyshire Police.
The official statement also urged the public to “completely avoid the area” as the investigation continues. Officials believe there is “no ongoing risk to the public”.
“Friar Gate has been completely closed from the junction with Curzon Street/Cheapside up to Ford Street,” the police added.
