According to the Pakistan embassy in Kyrgyzstan, several incidents of mob violence against foreign students in Bishkek have been reported since last evening. The embassy’s social media post noted that the situation intensified on Friday.

“There have been numerous incidents of mob violence against foreign students in Bishkek since last evening. The Kyrgyz press reports that the situation escalated yesterday following the online dissemination of videos depicting an altercation between Kyrgyz students and Egyptian medical students on May 13,” the Pakistan embassy stated.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said on Saturday that they are closely monitoring the well-being of Indian students in Bishkek, noting that the situation is reportedly calm now.

“We strongly advise students to stay in regular contact with the Embassy,” he said.

Furthermore, the Pakistan embassy reported that several hospitals affiliated with medical universities in Kyrgyzstan’s capital, as well as private residences of international students, have been attacked. “The hostels house students from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. There have been reports of minor injuries among several Pakistani students,” the embassy added. “Thus far, the violence appears to target all foreign students, not specifically Pakistanis,” it stressed.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his concerns on X, highlighting that he has instructed the Pakistani Ambassador to provide all necessary assistance. “Deeply concerned over the situation of Pakistani students in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. I have directed Pakistan’s Ambassador to provide all necessary help and assistance. My office is also in touch with the Embassy and is constantly monitoring the situation,” Shehbaz Sharif said.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also voiced his concerns on Saturday about the ongoing situation in Kyrgyzstan. “The reports of mob attacks on students in the Kyrgyz Republic are extremely concerning. We have established contact with Kyrgyz authorities to ensure the protection of Pakistani students. I have instructed our Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan to fully facilitate them,” he said in a post on X.
