Canadian Prine Minister Justin Trudeau who had once tweeted: “To those fleeing persecution, terror & war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith…Diversity is our strength,” has now seemingly changed his stance on Sunday saying that there would be “no advantage” to entering “irregularly,” as per Reuters. Another tweet, earlier on January this year had shown him in a photograph with a child, apparently, a Syrian refugee who had just arrived, with the caption “#WelcomeToCanada.”

Taking to Twitter to explain exactly what his plan was, Trudeau said, “I’m in Montreal today, working with the task force on irregular migration.” He also explained actions that he is taking against the illegal asylum seekers. In a series of tweets, the Canadian PM said, “First, we’ve established a temporary housing facility in Cornwall, ON to help ease the burden on Quebec. Second, we’re hiring more staff at the IRCC processing center in Montreal to review & process asylum claimants faster. Third, we’re also reaching out to folks in the US to make sure people who want to come to Canada understand the proper procedures to do so.”

However, he also stated that Canada is an open and welcoming society but at the same time has said everyone has to abide by the laws. The prime minister also assured his countrymen saying, “Canadians can be confident in our immigration system – people who cross the border in an irregular way will not be at an advantage.”

Earlier this week, government statistics showed the number of migrants has more than tripled in July – those who illegally crossed the border into Canada from the United States. More than 3,100 people walked across the border illegally in July to file refugee claims and were arrested, up from 884 in June, the federal government said, as per Reuters.
