Italy said Britain’s vote to leave the European Union must rattle Europe into making changes to bolster the future of the bloc, Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni said on Friday.

“On a political level, it is a moment in which we cannot stand still,” Gentiloni told reporters. “The decision of the British voters must be a wake-up call.”

Global financial markets plunged after referendum results showed a near 52-48 percent split for leaving.

“We have a duty to be clear with European citizens and the markets. It’s a very difficult moment for the European Union,” Gentiloni said.
