A man in South Australia accused of his Indian-origin wife’s murder has admitted to killing her. 42-year-old Vikrant Thakur, who also shares ties to India, made a shocking confession in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday. However, his admission wasn’t as straightforward as one would have expected.
Appearing in court virtually while still in custody for the murder charge, entered a plea of guilty to manslaughter but not guilty to murder of his wife Supriya Thakur, as per Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s news report.
“I plead for manslaughter, but not guilty for murder,” the Indian-origin man told the court, following his lawyer James Marcus’ advice.
For the unversed, murder is a more serious charge, as it involves an intentional act. Manslaughter, on the other hand, is deemed less culpable because it is legally viewed as a type of homicide, wherein the accused may not have deliberately caused someone’s death.
Indian-origin man confesses to killing his wife in Australia – What happened?
Ahead of Thakur’s major confession on Wednesday, prosecutors had asked the court to adjourn the matter for 16 weeks. They cited pending evidence, including a post-mortem report and DNA results, which were still awaited, as per ABC News.
These court developments come after Supriya Thakur was found unconscious at a Northfield home in Adelaide’s northern suburbs after police were called to the residence at about 8:30 pm on Sunday, December 21, 2025. Authorities ultimately disclosed that the 36-year-old Indian-origin woman couldn’t be revived despite their attempts to bring her back to life with CPR.
At the time, police also revealed that emergency services were called to the home on Sunday night following reports of a domestic assault. As per The Australia Today’s report, police said that another person was present inside the Adelaide residence at the time of the incident. They were not reported injured.
Consequently, the Thakur couple’s mobile phones were confiscated as part of the investigation.
Her husband, Vikrant Thakur, was arrested at the scene. He first appeared in court the next day, but didn’t request for release on bail. As a result, he’s expected to remain in custody until at least April 2026, as per ABC News.
Thakur will appear in court again in April.
Fundraiser for Indian-origin woman’s son after Australia death
An anonymously created fundraiser by Supriya Thakur’s friends and community members on GoFundMe has brought in over $11,000 in donations for her son. The campaign describes the deceased woman as a “devoted mother who worked tirelessly… to build a secure future for her only son.”
According to the GoFundMe page, Supriya worked long hours and aspired to become a registered nurse, motivated by her desire to help people and create a better future for her son.
“Her tragic passing has left her son without his mother and has turned his life upside down overnight. He is now facing an uncertain future without the person who cared for him most,” the post reads. “The funds raised will be used to assist with funeral and memorial expenses, as well as to provide ongoing support and stability for Supriya’s son.”
As of now, the campaign has raised $11,507 of $28,000 in donations.
One of her friends, Ella Butler, told 7NEWS, “She should be remembered as a really, really beautiful mother, as a really good friend.”
“She would work up to 80 hours a week because she loved her job so much, and she just wanted to bring home as much money as possible so her son could have the best life ever.”
