Hours after he was booked for allegedly writing articles and books against the Pakistan government and the army, former Pakistan envoy to US Husain Haqqani said, “How weak must the Pakistan army be, if an individual’s articles and books amount to waging war against it. As far as FIR is concerned, it won’t make any difference. It is only aimed at propaganda war inside Pakistan,” ANI quoted him as saying.

Haqqani has also made a clarion called to his country not to defy the global community over terrorist Hafiz Saeed. Haqqani said that Pakistan should rather cooperate on the issue with the United Nations. Observing that it would be in Pakistan’s interest to give give in to the demands of the UN, he added that this would make the world stop being suspicious of the country’s intentions in the fight against terrorism. “It would be in Pakistan’s interest to give United Nations monitoring team complete access to Hafiz Saeed and all entities associated with him. The very fact that Pak wants to hide him from rest of the world basically makes the world more suspicious,” he was quoted as saying by ANI.

On allegations of issuing visas to CIA agents during his tenure, the former envoy said it was propaganda war. “No unauthorised visa was ever issued while I was Pakistan’s ambassador to the US. To blame ambassador for intelligence failures and that Osama Bin Laden was found in Pakistan by Americans and not by intelligence agency actually shows it just wants to conceal its embarrassment,” he added.

He was named in the FIR lodged by three persons in two police stations in Pakistan’s Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province. Three FIRs were lodged in Cantonment and Bilitang police stations by Momin, Muhammad Asghar and Shamsul Haq.

As per complainants, the former envoy had caused irreparable loss to the country and also defamed it. They also alleged in the FIR that Haqqani was a “mentor of the Memogate scandal.” He issued visas to “CIA and Indian agents” during his tenure as Pakistani ambassador to the US. He was serving as an ambassador from 2008 to 2011 in the US. He was removed from his post for alleged role in what came to be known as Memogate controversy.

The sections of the Pakistan Penal Code that have been applied by police in the FIRs are 120B (hatching a criminal conspiracy) and 121A (waging a war against Pakistan). A police official said that Haqqani must surrender himself to them or he would be declared an absconder.
