This one too was very strong at 5.0 on the Richter scale although nowhere near the April quake measured at magnitude-7.8.
Earthquake in Nepal:Earthquake in Nepal: In yet another fearful reminder of the ‘big one’, also known as the ‘Gorkha earthquake’, Nepal was hit by not just one, but 2 quakes today – effects of one were felt in Kathmandu Valley too. These ones too were strong enough at 4.6 and 4.7 on the Richter scale although nowhere near the April quake measured at magnitude-7.8. The quakes hit the region at 9.22 AM. While that one killed some 9,000 people and injured as many as 22,000, there is no news yet of anyone being injured by the temblor today. The quakes today sparked panic among the people and they could be seen rushing out of their homes onto the streets.
According to the National Seismological Centre (NSC), a 4.6 magnitude quake was reported at 9.22 am local time followed by another of a higher 4.7 magnitude at 10.06 am. The epicentre of the second earthquake was near Swanra in western Nepal, while the epicentre of first lay near Salu in central Nepal, The Himalayan Times reported. The NSC said these were the aftershocks of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake of 2015. Until now, 478 aftershocks, including today’s, have occurred since the 2015 earthquake, it added.
The horrific earthquake that had hit Nepal had also been felt as far as New Delhi. In India, it had caused a lot of damage and led to the death of a number of people besides causing much damage to property. Since then India has been rocked by quakes a number of times, but none was as bad as the 7.8 magnitude one. India has also been shaken by earthquakes striking from the quake-prone Afghanistan-Pakistan region. However, barring the fact that India gets shaken, the damage has been mostly restricted to Pakistan.
