Bangladesh Election Results 2026 Highlights: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has claimed victory in country’s first general election since the 2024 uprising. ONce the results are officially announced, the party will form the next government which could mark a major political shift after years of bitter rivalry and contested elections.

In a message shared on X on Friday, the party’s media team said the BNP had won enough seats in Parliament to govern on its own. The Election Commission has not yet released the final official results. However, several local news reports have also said the party is set to win.

The BNP is led by Tarique Rahman, its candidate for prime minister. Rahman, 60, returned to Bangladesh in December after living in London for 17 years. He is the son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who passed away in December.

Voting took place on Thursday under heavy security. The election came at a time when there were concerns about weakening democratic systems, growing political clashes and pressure on the rule of law. It was also the first national vote since the violent student-led protests in July 2024 forced then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to step down and leave for India.

To form the government, a party or alliance must secure at least 151 of the 300 directly elected seats.

Which parties are contesting and why is it being called a two-way battle?

Four main alliances are contesting the elections, namely the Bangladesh National Party (BNP), 11-Party Alliance, National Democratic Front and Greater Sunni Alliance. The contest, however, is being deemed as a two-way battle with BNP and 11-Party alliance at the forefront.

BNP is being led by Tarique Rahman, son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. The party will contest on all 300 seats, with the help of independent candidates and alliances. It has directly 288 of its own candidates.se

The 11-Party Alliance, on the other hand, is headed by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. The alliance will contest on 298 seats.

Notably, Hasina’s Awami League will remain absent from elections as it has been banned from political activity.

When will results be declared?

Pollingwas held on Feb 12 between 7:30 am and 4:00 pm across the country. The counting of votes started soon after 4 pm. The results will be announced officially by the Bangladesh Election Commission on the morning of February 13, upon the completion of vote counting.

Bangladesh Election Results 2026 LIVE updates: BNP set to tackle economic challenges after election win, writes BBC

With the election behind it, the BNP now faces the tough job of reviving Bangladesh’s economy. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Bangladesh was among the fastest-growing economies in Asia, writes BBC. Experts had predicted it would soon move ahead of several larger developing countries in the region.

However, the pandemic badly affected key export sectors, slowing down growth, the BBC reported. Later, political unrest following the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024 further hurt investor confidence. Ongoing instability reduced business activity and slowed new investments.

The new government takes charge at a difficult time. Inflation is at 8.5%, the highest in South Asia, making daily life more expensive for ordinary people. Rising prices have been a major concern for voters.

At the same time, US trade measures have added pressure on the garment sector, which makes up about 80% of the country’s exports. Former US President Donald Trump had first imposed a 37% tariff on goods from Bangladesh. The rate was gradually reduced and was brought down to 19% this week under a new trade agreement.

The loss was especially painful in Rangpur division, which has long been considered its main support base. The party could not win any seat there, and even its senior leaders were defeated.

Party chairman GM Quader lost from the Rangpur-3 seat after receiving 37,933 votes. The seat was won by Jamaat-backed candidate Md Mahbubur Rahman Belal, who secured 157,403 votes. The BNP’s Shamsuzzaman Samu came second with 74,171 votes. A report by Desh Rupantor said that GM Quader did not cast his vote on Thursday.

Bangladesh Election Results 2026 LIVE updates: Exile to Power - Rahman's political comeback

The election result marks a major comeback for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its leader Tarique Rahman, who is now set to become Bangladesh’s next prime minister.

Just two years ago, the situation was very different. Rahman was living in London by choice, while many BNP leaders and workers were jailed during Sheikh Hasina’s government.

Rahman’s political journey has been full of challenges. He was arrested in 2007 on corruption charges and moved to London the following year. He was later given a life sentence in his absence over an earlier attack on a rally linked to Hasina. Rahman has always said the cases against him were politically driven. After Hasina was removed from power in 2024, several cases and convictions against him were overturned, clearing the way for his return to Bangladesh.

Rahman comes from a powerful political family. His father, Ziaur Rahman, played a key role in Bangladesh’s independence movement and later became president before he was assassinated in 1981.

His mother, Khaleda Zia, served as prime minister three times. She too faced arrest and spent time in prison during the rule of Hasina’s Awami League government. Zia had planned to contest this election, but she passed away in December, just days after her son returned home from London.
