What is PM Modi’s Startup India programme, and its performance in 8 years; check the details

Startup India Initiative

Launched on January 16, 2016, by PM Modi, the Startup India initiative aims to foster innovation among startups and promote investments in the Indian startup ecosystem.

Registration Process

Startups are required to register with the DPIIT under the Commerce Ministry to access various benefits, including tax incentives, simplified compliance procedures, and expedited intellectual property rights (IPR) processes.

Current Startup Registration

As of January 8, 2024, over 1.17 lakh startups in India have registered with DPIIT.

Income Tax Exemptions

A total of 2,977 startups have received income tax exemptions under the Startup India initiative.

SIDBI Fund of Funds Scheme

Established in 2016 with a corpus of Rs 10,000 crore, the SIDBI Fund of Funds scheme has funded 3,682 startups, with a commitment of about Rs 10,229 crore to 129 AIFs.

Job Creation

More than 1.14 lakh recognized startups have reported creating over 12 lakh jobs, averaging approximately 11 jobs per recognized startup, according to the annual review released on December 26 by the commerce ministry.

AIF Investment

A total of Rs 17,272 crore has been invested by AIFs in 915 startups under the SIDBI Fund of Funds scheme.

FFS Mechanism

The Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS) does not directly invest in startups. Instead, it provides capital to SEBI-registered AIFs, which, in turn, invest in Indian startups through equity and equity-linked instruments.

Startup India Seed Fund Scheme

Rs 747 crore has been approved for 192 incubators under SISFS, resulting in Rs 291 crore being invested in 1,579 startups. The scheme supports startups in proof of concept, prototype development, product trials, market-entry, and commercialization.

Startup Eligibility Criteria

Startups should be operational for not over 10 years, incorporated as a pvt ltd. registered partnership or LLP with turnover not exceeding Rs 100 crore for any financial year since its incorporation.
