Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September, the PM Vishwakarma Scheme aims to provide recognition and support to artisans and craftspeople engaged in 18 traditional trades.

To be eligible, artisans or craftspeople must be working with hands and tools in one of the designated 18 trades, have a minimum age of 18 years at the time of registration, and not have availed loans under similar credit-based schemes by the central or state government.

The scheme has received a total of 37.68 lakh applications. Out of these, 57,815 artisans and craftspeople have been registered.

The scheme encompasses 18 traditional trades, including fishing net maker, tailor, washerman, garland maker, barber, doll and toy maker, basket/mat/broom maker, mason, cobbler, sculptor, stone breaker, potter, goldsmith, locksmith, hammer and tool kit maker, blacksmith, armourer, boat maker, and carpenter.

The registered applicants, totalling 77,630, are at various stages of verification. This includes processes at the gram panchayat level (5.30 lakh), district implementation committee (2.08 lakh), and screening committee (83,243).

The scheme offers identification and certification to artisans and craftsmen. Basic skill training for seven days (40 hours) and advanced training for 15 days (120 hours) are provided, with a stipend of Rs 500 per day during the training period.

Artisans are eligible for a toolkit incentive of Rs 15,000. Additionally, a collateral-free loan of Rs 1 lakh in the first tranche and Rs 2 lakh in the second tranche is available. These loans carry a concessional 5% interest, with an interest subvention cap of 8% borne by the MSME Ministry.

The loans are to be repaid by the beneficiaries at the concessional interest rate, contributing to the economic upliftment of artisans and craftsmen.

Registration and benefits under the scheme are restricted to one member per family. Additionally, the applicant or their family members should not be employed in government service.

The scheme emphasizes skill development by providing both basic and advanced training, enhancing the capabilities of artisans in their respective trades.
